1. How do you respond to those who say Scaremare does not present the Gospel or “scares” people into making a decision?
One purpose of Scaremare is to present the salvation message of Jesus Christ. An aspect of that life-giving message is that we will die in our sins and experience judgment. The House presents a 25 minute “sermon” that “it is appointed unto man once to die and after this the judgment.” This is displayed through several scenes of death. The message at the end of the tour delivers the final point – “what will happen when you die? Jesus can give you life.” Jesus himself told the parables of hell (Luke 16:9). He was not trying to “scare a decision” out of people, rather, making them come to grips with the reality of judgment.
2. How do you respond to those who say we should not charge lost people to hear the Gospel?
Scaremare is a form of entertainment for lost people in the community, and as such, they do not have a problem paying to attend. Many of them come several nights each year. Proceeds from Scaremare cover all project expenses and go towards the continuing ministry of Oceanside church.
3. Is Scaremare safe?
Scaremare is carefully planned with safety in mind. Strict building, fire and insurance codes are maintained in the House. Should an emergency occur, an announcement will be made over the house sound system and lights will come on.
4. Do you emphasize Halloween with Scaremare?
The project takes advantage of the harvest season, but does not “celebrate” Halloween. There is no Halloween emphasis or activity at Scaremare. Scaremare is a balance between a fun house and a house of death.
5. What happens to those who make decisions at Scaremare?
Those from out of town are sent to the church that brought them or a church in their area. Those from the Mt. Pleasant area with no church affiliation are given to the various small group leaders at Oceanside Church
6. What would you say to those who disagree with Scaremare?
Scaremare is not for everyone. We would certainly welcome them to visit the House and see for themselves what happens. If there are still questions or concerns, we invite them to visit our office and talk with any of our staff. The bottom line is that sincere Christians are going to have disagreements over styles and methods of evangelism.
